§ From Clement Caines

2 April 1811, St. Kitts. Declares that JM’s name has reached the West Indies and “is celebrated throughout the World.” Conveys his “respect and high esteem” and encloses his “literary compositions.”1

1Clement Caines was a prominent St. Kitts planter and opponent of the slave trade. His publications included pamphlets on the history and agriculture of the Leeward Islands and also the American Embargo of 1807–9 (Lowell J. Ragatz, ed., A Guide for the Study of British Caribbean History, 1763–1834 [Washington, 1932], p. 283).
