To James Madison from Richard Harrison, 20 July 1806 (Abstract)

From Richard Harrison, 20 July 1806 (Abstract)

§ From Richard Harrison. 20 July 1806, Auditor’s Office. “I have the honor herewith to submit for your inspection a general statement of the Credits claimed by Mr. OBrien, late Consul at Algiers.1 The remarks subjoined to each of the items will shew how few of them are vouched, and, consequently, how few can be admitted unless previously & specially sanctioned by you.

“If a more detailed view of the charges, classed under different heads, should be thought necessary, it shall be made out; but it will be a work attended with some delay. In the mean the particulars, as far as exhibited, may be all seen by referring to the subordinate Accounts.”

RC (DNA: RG 59, CD, Algiers, vol. 7, pt. 2). 2 pp. Enclosure not found, but see n. 1.

1Filed with the RC is Richard O’Brien’s account addressed to JM (1 p.; in a clerk’s hand, with signature, address, and note: “Errors & omissions Exceptd.” by O’Brien) totaling $54,500 for his service as consul at Algiers from 10 July 1797 to 10 July 1806. The sum was $9,000 short, because the charges listed were $36,000 for salary, $4,000 for outfit, $1,000 for travel to the United States, $15,000 for contingent expenses, $1,500 for expenses in the United States until his accounts were settled, and $6,000 for a vice-consul and secretary for six years, all of which added up to $63,500.
