§ From Joseph Russell. 12 March 1806, Washington. “The annexed is a Copy of a letter from Mr. Nathaniel Fellows to Mr. Perez Perten recommending his Nephew Mr. Nathaniel Fellows Junr. as Consul at the Havanna provided Mr. Hill resigns, as Mr. Morton is not Comeing I take the Liberty of sending it to you.”1

1Appended to Russell’s letter is the following undated letter addressed to Perez Morton and signed “Nathaniel Fellow”: “[(]Copy of Letter to Mr Morten,) I cannot but think my application was forgotten when the last appointment was made by the president however cannot give over my Solicitations for my Nephew who is so well established in the Havana he stands on the best terms with every officer of the Goverment & I have reason to think that he can affect more with them, than any American that is here or has been here for many months whether he resignes the Place or whether he is recalled I cannot say however if either should be the case and the office should be vacant I shall thank you for your Interest to review the application for the appointment of my Nephew his Political oppinion are in Unison with mine which I think no one, will doubt are in the Interest of the present admistration of the United States.”
