From George Washington to John Moody, 4 March 1799

To John Moody

Mount Vernon March 4th 1799

Sir,

I have received your letter of the 23d Ulto enclosing one addressed to the Secretary of War, which has been forwarded to that officer according to your desire.1

The usual course of applications for Military appointments is to the Secretary of War, who lays the same before the President of the United States, and your application, through that channel, will undoubtedly meet the attention which it may merit. I am Sir, Your most Obedt sevt

Df, in Tobias Lear’s hand, DLC:GW. The letter is mistakenly docketed “To Mr Saml Moody.”

A John Moody served in several Virginia regiments of the Continental line. Capt. John Moody who died in Hanover County on 3 Oct. 1826 was identified as a veteran of the Revolutionary War (Burgess, Virginia Soldiers of 1776, description begins Louis A. Burgess, ed. Virginia Soldiers of 1776. 3 vols. 1929. Reprint. Spartanburg, S.C., 1973. description ends 1:336).

1. John Moody wrote a letter to GW from Richmond on 23 Feb., in which he said: “Inclosed is a Recomendation to the Secretary of Warr in my favour for a Captains Comision. And I hereby Sollicite an Additional One from you Provided you are in the Habit of Doing So and I flater myself you are always willing to Promote old officers and Soldiers a Majors Comision would be Most agreeable as I am forty two years of age and Rather inclin’d to Corpulence” (DLC:GW).
