From James McHenry

War department, Novr 16 1798

Sir,

As the enclosed paper, shewing the component parts, number of Men and pay of the Officers composing the present Army Establishment may save you a reference to the several laws upon the subject, I have thought it proper to have it made out and transmitted.1 With great respect, I am Sir, Your most obedt Servant,

James McHenry

LS, DLC:GW.

1The enclosure lists the ranks of the “Army of the United States on the present Establishment,” including “One Regiment of Light Dragoons,” “A Corps of Artillerists and Engineers,” “An additional Regiment of Artillerists and Engineers,” and “Sixteen Regiments of Infantry.” It goes on to enumerate monthly pay, monthly forage money, and daily rations for each rank in the army. The list is in DLC:GW and is transcribed in its entirety for CD-ROM:GW.
