To George Washington from Thomas Jefferson, 2 February 1793

From Thomas Jefferson

[Philadelphia] Feb. 2. 93.

Th: Jefferson has the honor to inclose for the President’s notice a small pamphlet sent to Th: J. by the author, containing some ideas which may merit attention, in due time, at the Federal city.1

AL, DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters; LB, DNA: RG 59, George Washington’s Correspondence with His Secretaries of State; LB (photocopy), DLC:GW. The letter-book copy is mistakenly dated “2d March 1793.” Tobias Lear’s docket on the receiver’s copy also reads “March,” but it was later changed to “Feby.”

1The enclosure, Tench Coxe’s A Plan for Encouraging Agriculture, and Increasing the Value of Farms in the Midland and More Western Counties of Pennsylvania, Applicable to Several Other Parts of That State, and to Many Parts of the United States (Philadelphia, 1793), argued in favor of constructing a town on the Susquehanna River and other bodies of water, as a means of encouraging commerce and producing economic prosperity in a short period of time. On 8 Feb., Jefferson wrote Coxe, informing him that he had sent his pamphlet to the president and asking him for an extra copy for the commissioners and one for his own use (Jefferson Papers, description begins Julian P. Boyd et al., eds. The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. 41 vols. to date. Princeton, N.J., 1950–. description ends 25:158–59). GW forwarded a copy of Coxe’s pamphlet in his second letter to the D.C. Commissioners of 3 Mar. 1793.
