Monticello Feb. 22. 1790.
Dear Sir
Inclosed I send you a state of the administration of my sister Elizabeth’s personalty, balance in her favor £107–7–2. one seventh of which, to wit £15. 6–9 with interest from the day of her death is the share of each distributee. Mr. Lewis and Mr. Garth settled the hire of her negro woman, and also her board and cloathing, the former at the same price which the executors had given my mother, the latter considerably lower than they had estimated and I had allowed my brother for the same article before she came of age. I desired the gentlemen to ask the attendance of Mr. Hastings Marks one of the distributees, as he was convenient to them: but I do not know whether he attended. Below her account I have stated yours, balance in my favor £8–11. which if you will settle with my brother according to your convenience it will suffice.—I send you the pedigree of Caractacus also the only two I have of the books your son desired. The others I either have not or are lent out.—What says Colo. R. Lewis about the lands?—Some of our neighbors are to come and dine with us tomorrow: we shall be very happy if you and my sister will be of the party. PrC (MHi). The enclosed account concerning Elizabeth’s personalty has not been found. On 28 Feb. 1790 TJ wrote again to Lewis saying that this account “went only to the money in my hands, and I forgot in that moment that she had £28-3-7 ¼ in J. Bolling’s hands, her part of her sister Jane’s estate. I now enclose you an order on J. Bolling for £4-0-6 with interest from Jan. 11. 1771 your part of that bond‥‥ [In postscript:] I have given my brother an order on you for £8-11” (PrC in CSmH); see TJ to Randolph Jefferson, 28 Feb. 1790. The enclosed copy of Caractacus’ pedigree has not been found, but it must have been copied from that in TJ’s Farm Book, which reads: “Caractacus. His sire young Fearnought who was got by old Fear[nought] on Calista. Foaled May. 1775.” Caractacus’ dam was Allycrocker (, 1, 92). The books sent to Lewis’ son have not been identified.
Lewis evidently replied to the above on 22 Feb. 1790, for on that date SJL records the receipt of a (missing) letter from Charles Lilburne Lewis, “Buckisld. Feb. 22.”
