6In the hand of Sarah Jay.

7The only year during the Jays’ stay in France that Feb. 7 fell on a Saturday. John Jay had only just returned from England; he rejoined his family at the end of January: Jay Papers, III, 492.

8On a blank section of the sheet BF wrote “[deleted: To] The honourable the Burgomasters and Senate of the Free Imperial City of Hamburgh”, interlining “The honourable” and correcting the spelling of Hamburgh. He was making the address conform to what appeared on the address line of Congress’ Nov. 1 letter to the city officials, which Boudinot had asked him to forward while enclosing a second copy for BF’s own files: Boudinot to BF, Nov. 1. For the address line BF was copying, see Smith, Letters, XXI, 133n.
