On this date, GW receipted for $6,000 received “of Lieutt Colfax for public uses” (ADS, RNHi).

On this date, GW’s aide-de-camp Tench Tilghman wrote Maj. Gen. William Heath: “Will you be kind enough to take opportunities of forwarding the inclosed.

“Count Rochambeau, in a letter of the 20th, mentions that another Vessel has arrived at Newport from Cape Francois which she left the 1st Inst. the private letters by her say that Count D’Estaings success over Admiral Hood is sure—This Account came so many ways that I cannot but hope it is true—God grant it … His Excellency recd your favr of the 22d” (MHi: Heath Papers; see also Heath to GW, 22 Feb.). The enclosures have not been identified. The naval intelligence was erroneous (see Rochambeau to GW, 18 Feb., n.1).

On this date, GW’s aide-de-camp Alexander Hamilton wrote Maj. Richard Platt, deputy quartermaster general of the main army: “I have taken The Generals orders on the subject of your letter of the 24th—As Col. Hays oxen appear to have been converted to the public use, justice requires they should be replaced to him—as it is not known certainly in what manner they were used and as it is not material to the public from what department the compensation comes, The General directs that the Qr Mr General will deliver Col. Hay a couple of good oxen in lieu of those taken from him” (DLC:GW). Platt’s letter to Hamilton of 24 Feb., requesting that Col. Ann Hawkes Hay be compensated for oxen taken from him, is in DLC:GW.
