General Orders

Head-Quarters [  ] Friday June 4th 1779

Parole [  ]C. Signs [  ]

Varick transcript, DLC:GW. No words were given for parole or countersigns on this date.

For a payment of $1,000 on this date to John Wallace for GW’s use of his house during the winter encampment at Middlebrook, see the source note for the general orders of 6 February. For Wallace’s desire for additional compensation, and GW’s belief that he had been “hansomly paid already,” see Nathanael Greene to Sidney Berry, 23 June, and Greene to Wallace, 5 July and 13 Sept., in Greene Papers, description begins Richard K. Showman et al., eds. The Papers of General Nathanael Greene. 13 vols. Chapel Hill, N.C., 1976–2005. description ends 4:177–78, 205–6, 386–87.

GW’s aide-de-camp Richard Kidder Meade received money from Maj. Caleb Gibbs on 5 June and paid $10 for “Lodging & Breakfast” at Pompton, N.J., where GW apparently stayed overnight, as well as $5 for lodging and breakfast “for the servants” (Revolutionary War Accounts, Vouchers, and Receipted Accounts 1, 1776–1780, DLC:GW, Ser. 5).
