Parole: Inverness.
Winchester: Friday, April 16th 1756.
A Court martial to sit immediately for trial of John Garland and Thomas Hope, confined for fighting.1
Lieutenant Gist is to give in a Return immediately of the Recruits he brought to Town last night: with their names, age, size, &c.2 Sergeant Clunis3 to see that the man who is employed in straightening the arms, keep close to his Business; and is to order him all the assistance he can. The Troops to receive three days provision to-day at ten o’clock.

1. For the identity of John Garland of Robert Spotswood’s company in the Virginia Regiment, see Orders, 18 April 1756, n.1. Thomas Hope may be the English cook, in his early thirties, who enlisted at Fort Cumberland and was serving in Capt. Joshua Lewis’s company in the fall of 1757.
2. Nathaniel Gist’s return has not been found. Nathaniel Gist was the son of frontiersman Christopher Gist and lieutenant in his father’s company of scouts attached to the Virginia Regiment.
3. No Sergeant Clunis has been found, but “Clunis” may be the copyist’s misreading of “Davis.” There was a sergeant in Capt. Christopher Gist’s company named Richard Davis, a young Maryland farmer who enlisted 5 Feb. 1756 at Baltimore.
