Baltimore May 24th 1793
Dear Sir
My Father desires me to present you his most respectful & affectionate wishes—He begs your acceptance of a China Bowl which may possibly be novel from its size & antiquity—it being much older than himself—It has been very carefully packed up & he hopes it will reach you safe[.] My Father is now here on his way to Washington County—having determined to reside with me near Hagers Town—since the Loss of my Mother—an Event which took place the 24th March last[.]1 He unites with me in Compliments and best wishes to you Mrs Washington & Family. with perfect respect & regard I am Dr Sir Yr mst obedt & vry huml. 1. William Fitzhugh, Sr., a native of Stafford County, Va., had moved to Calvert County, Md., during the 1750s. William Fitzhugh, Jr. (1761–1839), currently lived at his estate, The Hive, near Hagerstown, in Washington County, Maryland. During the Revolutionary War he served in the 3d Continental Dragoons 1779–83 (William Fitzhugh, Sr., to GW, 31 Mar. 1784). He later moved to New York State, where he invested in a 100–acre tract on which the present-day city of Rochester developed.
