May it Please your Exelencey
Upon the Repeated Request of Ensn Stanley to Represent to your Exelencey Something by which he may Obtain a Discharge from the Service, I have Inclosed the Doctrs Certificate & can Say no more in Favour of his obtaining a Discharge than that it Seems needless to hold Officers here that hant a Stomake. with Respect to the Company he Leaves there is but one Officer in it that Does Duty it Seems really Necessary that Some Care Should be taken of that Company more than now is.1 Your Exelencies most humble Servt

1. Caleb Stanley, an ensign in Capt. Israel Putnam, Jr.’s company in the Connecticut regiment commanded by Storrs, was discharged on 12 November. Surgeon John Spalding’s certificate of this date to Storrs states that Stanley “has been Sick for a Long time & Still Remains So he is afflicted with a Pain in his Breast which I Should think Best to have him Discharged from the Servis on that Account” (DLC:GW). See also Isaac Foster’s printed certificate of 12 Nov. stating that Stanley “is by reason of Sickness, unfit for Duty, and like to remain so during this Campaign” (ibid.).
