Having offered to serve the people of Illinois in Congress I beg leave to resign the Office of Secretary of the Illinois Territory, which I now hold.1 I tender you assurances of High consideration and have the honor to be Sir Yr. obt. Servt

1. Appointed secretary of Illinois Territory by JM in 1809, Pope served as a territorial delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives for two years, 1816–18.
