Sir

By the inattention of the Book Keeper who handed me the amount of the advance made to you in January you receive now £14. more than was due on your Account; I did not discover this error until the money was paid & entered at the Treasury & therefore defer rectifying the mistake till the end of the present quarter.1

Be pleased to observe the statement subjoyned which will shew the error I mention. I have the honor to be Sir your most obt Servt.

1. Virginia paid its delegates six dollars per day (Hening, Statutes description begins William Waller Hening, ed., The Statutes at Large; Being a Collection of All the Laws of Virginia, from the First Session of the Legislature, in the Year 1619 (13 vols.; Richmond and Philadelphia, 1819–23). description ends , XII, 48–49). Pendleton was the Virginia auditor of public accounts. See Account with the Commonwealth of Virginia, 20 Apr. 1787 and n. 2.

2. This should be £324.12.0 (see Account with the Commonwealth of Virginia, 20 Apr. 1787).

3. The correct amount was £324.12.0.

4. Note added by JM at a later time. The £14 was deducted from the quarter’s wages of 20 Oct. 1787 to 20 Jan. 1788 (James Madison, Account, 20 Oct. 1787–20 Jan. 1788 [Vi]).
