[New York, March 3, 1794. On March 6, 1794, Oliver Wolcott, Jr., wrote to Lamb: “The Secretary of the Treasy. has referred it to me to reply2 to your letter of the 3d. instant.” Letter not found.]
1. Lamb was collector of customs at New York.
2. Wolcott’s reply states: “The case mentioned in Mr. Hauterives Letter is supposed to be that of a Vessel entered for Exportation—on which no duties are payable except on being landed in the United States.… Under all circumstances of the present case it will be adviseable to accommodate in regard to sureties, for delivering the Cargoes in France—so far as respects the responsibility of the persons who may offer. It will be well to make this matter as easy as possible, it being a mere matter of precaution with the U States and a real difficulty to the parties concerned” (ADf, Connecticut Historical Society, Hartford).
Alexandre Maurice Blanc de Lanauette, Comte d’Hauterive, was the French consul in New York.
