To George Washington from John Kilty, 1 June 1795

From John Kilty

Annapolis, June 1st 1795

Sir

Since I had the honour to address your Excellency by the last mail,1 it has occurred to me that the enclosed Report of a Committee of our House of Delegates made at the last Session of Assembly would be the most genuine Testimony of my official conduct that could be offered inasmuch as it proceeded from five Gentlemen, with none of whom I had any degree of friendship or intimacy. The Clerk of the House of Delegates not being present, I could not obtain an attested copy of the report, and have therefore taken it out of the printed Journal of Proceedings, deeming that to be the most authentic form in which I could transmit it to your Excellency. I have only to add that it received the Concurrence of the House.2 I have the Honour to remain with great Respect, Sir Your Excellency’s Obedt humble servant

John Kilty

ALS, DLC:GW.

1Kilty probably was referring to his letter to GW of 29 May.

2The printed report from the Maryland House of Delegates states: “THE committee to whom was referred the memorial of John Kilty, clerk of the council … find … that in the course of the last year the memorialist has actually performed many and very important services to the state, which did not appertain to his duty as clerk of the council, more especially in the circumstance of translating and answering letters of material import written in the French language. … Your committee are also fully impressed with an opinion, that the duties imposed on the clerk of the council are laborious, perplexing, and of infinite importance to the state, and that the salary at present annexed to the office is very inadequate to the services required from the officer who fills it” (D, DLC:GW).

On 12 June, GW submitted to the Senate his nomination of Kilty as supervisor of the revenue for Maryland.
