1. These are BF’s square brackets.
2. BF is referring to the large script type that Fournier had engraved; see XXX, 346–7. This font included two lower-case p’s, one closed (which would leave a space before the next letter) and the other open, with a rising tail that would connect with the following letter to simulate handwriting. See the specimen reproduced in XXX, facing p. 347, where in the second phrase the p’s of “perfection” and “capable” differ.
