§ From Charles Treadwell Jr.
27 October 1801, St. Kitts. “Mr Gantt having previous to his departure to America, directed the Surgeon of the Hospital to recive & provide for two American Sailors, who were landed here from on board a Schooner from Philadelphia very sick & not having a⟨n⟩y ⟨w⟩ages due them to be supplied with Medicines & attendance at the Expence of Government; it remains for me to inform you that one has died & the other recovered & discharged and to enclose you the accounts for their supplies,1 for which I have drawn on you under date, for 141 94/100 Dolls. at thirty days sight, to which request your protection.”2

The enclosures (4 pp.) are a 27 Oct. 1801 bill against the United States for $149.04 for funds expended for the two men, which included a 5 percent commission of $7.10 for Treadwell; a statement of account against the United States by William Armstrong for food, wine, beds, funeral charges, and a coffin; a statement of account against the United States by Armstrong and Thurston for medicine, care, and supplies; and a 27 Oct. 1801 bill of exchange for $141.94 drawn on JM by Treadwell, payable to Clement Storer and endorsed by Storer to Richard Cutts.
2. Also in the first auditor’s records is a similar account from Treadwell, dated 8 July 1802, with an added charge for passage of surviving seaman John Taylor on the Cumberland, Capt. Francis Walt, to Portland (DNA: RG 217, First Auditor’s Accounts, no. 13,588).
