Your favor of the 12th inst came to hand this morning; our W. Mitchell is in Fincastle, we are sorry to say a statement of your Account cannot be drawn till his return which will be in a day or two.

Alexander Tompkins (ca. 1784–ca. 1864) was a clerk for the Lynchburg firm of William & Reuben Mitchell. By 1817 he had established his own mercantile business in Lynchburg under the name of A. Tompkins & Company. He later served as a cashier for both the Bank of Virginia and the Farmers’ Bank of Lynchburg (DNA: RG 29, CS, Lynchburg, 1820, 1850; Margaret Anthony Cabell, Sketches and Recollections of Lynchburg by the Oldest Inhabitant (Mrs. Cabell) 1858 [1858; repr. with additional material by Louise A. Blunt, 1974], suppl., 101; Lynchburg Hustings and Corporation Court Will Book, E:189–90).
TJ received $9 from the Mitchell partnership when the account was settled on 19 May 1812 (, 2:1277).
