To John Jay from Peter Augustus Jay, 16 October 1815

From Peter Augustus Jay

Rye 16 Oct. 1815

Dear Papa

On Friday last I went with the Commissioners of Fortifications to inspect the Fort & Batteries building at the Narrows. Upon my return in the Evening I heard of the Death of Sir James,1 & as I was going to bed found a Note in the Entry which had been sent during my Absence from Sir James’s son requesting to see me. The next morning I called on him. He told me of the loss of his Father & requested permission to bury him in the family burial Ground.2 He was brought to town in the afternoon, & the burial service was read over him in Trinity Church by the Bp. nobody being present except his son & Son in Law, Mr Munro his two sons & myself. He had desired that his funeral might be private. Yesterday he was brought here & interred. His Son, Mr OKill3 & myself followed the Carriage— Mr. Munro had come on before & had the Grave &c prepared. His Son & Son in law dined here & returned in the afternoon to town— Sir James since I saw him last summer had continued to grow weaker. For a fortnight past, it was perceived that he could not live long, & on Thursday last he expired. His Son expressed great Regret at the Differences which subsisted between his father & you, & said that Sir James had declared to him, that he felt no sort of Resentment or Enmity towards you— Thinking that you ought to be informed of these Circumstances, I shall send Bill with this letter. We are all well here. Tomorrow I shall take Mary & the Children to town if the weather does not prevent us. My Love to William & Sisters— I am my dear Father Your very Affect son
