To Thomas Jefferson from Joseph Anderson and William Cocke, 10 November 1803

From Joseph Anderson and William Cocke

Nov 10th [1803]

Sir

In Compliance with the request express’d in your note of the 5th Instant—we Recommend James Trimble Esqr Atty at Law—as a Commissioner of Bankruptcy—in the room of Edward Scott resign’d—Mr. Trimble resides at Dandridge in the County of Jefferson—

with Sentiments of Very high Consideration—we are most Respectfully

Jos: Anderson

Wm. Cocke

RC (DNA: RG 59, LAR); partially dated; in Anderson’s hand, signed by him and Cocke; endorsed by TJ as received 11 Nov. and “Trimble James to be Commr. bkrptcy. Ten. v. Edwd Scott” and so recorded in SJL.

TJ’s note of 5 Nov. to the Tennessee senators is not recorded in SJL and has not been found.

The State Department issued a commission for james trimble as bankruptcy commissioner for the District of East Tennessee on 12 Nov. and TJ entered the change on his list of nominations for bankruptcy commissioners (list of commissions in Lb in DNA: RG 59, MPTPC; Vol. 37:711).

Writing from Knoxville, edward scott notified Madison on 22 Aug. that he found “it inconvenient to discharge the duties of Commissioner of Bankruptcy” and was returning his commission (RC in DNA: RG 59, LAR; endorsed by TJ: “resigns as Commr. bkrptcy Tennissee”). For Scott’s appointment, see Vol. 38:469-70 and Vol. 39:272-3.
