Record of John Jay’s Oath as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States of America

[New York, 19 October 1789]

Be it Remembered, That at the City of New York on the nineteenth Day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty nine, personally appeared before me, Richard Morris Esquire Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, John Jay of the same City, Esquire, and did then and there in due form take an oath in the words following, to wit, “I John Jay do Solemnly swear, that I will administer Justice without respect to persons, and do equal Right to the poor and to the rich, and that I will impartially discharge and perform all the Duties incumbent on me, as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States of America, according to the best of my abilities and understanding, agreeably to the Constitution and Laws of the United States, so help me God.” And be it also Remembered, That at the same time and place before me, the said Richard Morris, he the said John Jay did in due form take another oath in the words following, to wit—

“I John Jay do Solemnly swear, that I will support the Constitution of the United States, so help me God.[”]1
