(2) Charleston Investigator, 22, 24, 25 Aug. 1812, in each of which editor John Mackey included a prospectus declaring that the newspaper would be independent in affiliation and faithfully follow “TRUTH, sacred TRUTH,” while at the same time supporting the present administration; pledging that if the Republican government were overturned by its enemies, Mackey would choose to be “buried beneath the ruins of that inestimable Constitution”; asserting that editorials on public men and policies would be critical yet fair and honorable; stating that the paper would cover a wide range of topics; and noting that it would be published six days a week, with annual subscriptions costing $8, payable at half-year intervals.
