Fielding Lewis

ALS, DLC:GW.

1According to his cash accounts GW sent £40 to Fielding Lewis by Charles Lewis on 18 June 1758 (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 39). The only Strother account in General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends is GW’s account (f. 278) with the heirs of William Strother regarding purchase of land at Ferry Farm. For a discussion of this, see Robert Carter Nicholas to GW, 5 Jan. 1758, n.1. The Va. Regimental Accounts, 1755–58, however, contain two other Strother accounts. On 29 Oct. 1756 John Strother was paid for nine muskets, and on 29 Aug. 1757 Anthony Strother was paid “a Years rent of a House in Fredericksbg for a Guard House to Lodge Drafts &c.” (DLC:GW). GW’s letter to Fielding Lewis has not been found.

2Lewis inadvertently wrote “the” instead of “he.”
