West Point March 16th 1780

To His Excellency General Washington

Sir your Petitioner Ensign Daniel Brown of the 10th Massachustts regiment, Humbly Sheweth that it is with great reluctance that he Petitions to your Excellency for a Discharge from the Army, but the Situation of his Family and Domestic affairs, is such that he is Compel’d to resign the Service, not from any dislik to it, but the calls of his Family is so great that humanity forbids his tareying aney longer, he having Served in it Since the Commencement of the present War.

He therefore most earnestly requests your Excellency to accept of his resignation and greant him a Dismition from the Army. I am with the greatest respect Your Excellencies Obedient Humble Servant
