LB, DLC: Robert Morris Papers. No reply to Morris from GW has been found.
1. Daniel Russell (1769–1804) was the son of Charlestown, Mass., merchant Thomas Russell (1740–1796) and his first wife, Elizabeth Henley. Daniel’s father had partnered with Morris in several shipping ventures and served under him as deputy agent of marine for New England during Morris’s tenure as Continental agent of marine. Also a merchant, Daniel from 1795 to 1799 was a partner with John Soley, Jr., in the Boston firm of Russell and Soley. Located on Long Wharf, the firm sold goods such as “Russia Duck” and French indigo (see Columbian Centinel [Boston], 10 June 1795; see also Massachusetts Mercury [Boston], 23 Aug. 1799, and , 1:247).
The book presented to GW has not been identified. However, Morris may have transmitted Jedidiah Morse’s The Duty of Resignation Under Afflictions … (Boston, 1796), John Warren’s An Eulogy on the Honourable Thomas Russell … (Boston, 1796), or Peter Thacher’s A Sermon, Preached to the Society in Brattle-Street … (Boston, 1796). These works were composed on the occasion of Thomas Russell’s death in April 1796 and were in GW’s library (see , 145, 198, 219).
