George Washington Papers

To George Washington from Samuel Holten, [January 1795–February 1795]

From Samuel Holten

[January–February 1795] Tuesday morng

Mr. Holten presents his most respectful compliments to the President, and will do himself the honor of dining with him on Thursday next.

D, DLC: Papers of Samuel Holten. This document is written on the reverse of what looks to be a cover addressed to Holten, “Member of Congress Philadelphia.” Also on the page is a note that John Sitman, Burrill Devereux, and Richard Pedrick “signed the letter respectg the fisheries.” The latter evidently is a reference to their letter to James Madison of 22 Jan. (Madison Papers description begins William T. Hutchinson et al., eds. The Papers of James Madison, Congressional Series. 17 vols. Chicago and Charlottesville, Va., 1962–91. description ends , 15:449–51), and it seems most probable that Holten wrote this note to GW about the same time.
