Augt 27. 1794.

The Secretary of the Treasury presents his respects to the President incloses a recommendation of persons for officers of the Revenue Cutter in South Carolina. Capt. Cochran who is now here expresses an opinion that as the person recommended for third Mate is very young, it will be adviseable to defer his appointment ’till some further trial of him.1

1The enclosed recommendation has not been identified. On 29 Aug., GW signed a commission for "James Christian to be 2d. Mate of the So. Carolina revenue Cutter" (JPP description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends , 319). The South Carolina was a 38-ton schooner launched in 1793 and sold in 1798.
