John Stagg, Jr., to Tobias Lear
War Department, Philadelphia, 18 Jan. 1792. Transmits the enclosed letter from the governor of Virginia to the secretary of war, dated 5 Jan. 1792, in order for it to be submitted to the president of the United States.1
ALS, DLC:GW; LB, DLC:GW.
1. The enclosure has not been found, but Henry Knox acknowledged its original receipt in a later letter to Gov. Henry Lee. Lee’s letter to the secretary of war probably dealt with federal financing of Virginia’s efforts to protect its southwestern frontier (see Knox to Lee, 2 Feb. 1792, Calendar of Virginia State Papers, description begins William P. Palmer et al., eds. Calendar of Virginia State Papers and Other Manuscripts. 11 vols. Richmond, 1875–93. description ends 5:434–35) Later this day Tobias Lear returned to Knox what was presumably the same letter (DLC:GW).
