War Department [Philadelphia] 27 August 1791. Informs GW that Lieutenant Sherman of the Rhode Island Company of the Second U.S. Regiment “has left his company on the march” and desires to resign his commission: “from received knowledge of his character, . . . his resignation will not injure the service.”1

1Lt. Henry Sherman, Jr. (1759–1829), served as an officer of Rhode Island troops in the Continental army during the American Revolution from 1777 to 1783 and was recommissioned on 4 Mar. 1791. His resignation was accepted effective 27 August.
