Philadelphia, 20 July 1791. Presents a copy of An Essay on Commerce and Luxury which he has published this day.1

A copy of the enclosed work, Of Commerce and Luxury (Philadelphia, 1791), was bound with miscellaneous pamphlets in the Mount Vernon library before GW’s death (Griffin, Boston Athenæum Washington Collection, description begins Appleton P.C. Griffin, comp. A Catalogue of the Washington Collection in the Boston Athenæum. Cambridge, Mass., 1897. description ends 558). The notice appearing in the General Advertiser and Political, Commercial and Literary Journal (Philadelphia), 29 July, stated that Thomas Lang’s “An Essay on Commerce and Luxury” was published on that day. The city directory gives the printer’s address as 21 Church Alley (Philadelphia Directory, description begins Clement Biddle. The Philadelphia Directory. Philadelphia, 1791. description ends 1791, 74).
