Mathew Carey to George Washington, 20 October 1788
From Mathew Carey
Oct. 20, 1788
Sir
I enclose a paper containing part of a letter written by your excellency at an early period of the late contest. It must be regarded as extremely interesting, showing clearly with what firmness your excellency, & I believe, most of the distinguished Characters in this country, embarked in the opposition to Great Britain. It is, therefore, highly worthy of preservation. Doubts, however, have arisen in my mind whether the publication of it might not be disagreeable. I request a few lines on the subject—and, if you allow it to be printed, I request to be favoured with the whole of it. I remain your excellency’s most obdt & very hble servt
