George Washington Papers

From George Washington to Major William Galvan, 10 July 1780

To Major William Galvan

Head Quarters Col. Dey’s Bergen County
10th July 1780

Sir

I have received your several favors of the 2d 3d and 13th of June.

I am much obliged to you for the intelligence they contain, and should any thing else occur worth attention, you will be pleased to forward it with your other dispatches.

What further instructions are necessary at your post are transmitted you on this occasion by the Marquiss la Fayette.1

With respect to the infantry—the army has undergone no changes since you left it, and I can only remind you of what I have said to yourself on this subject.2

Df, in James McHenry’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW.

1GW had stationed Galvan at Cape Henry, Va., to await the arrival of the French expeditionary force (see GW to Galvan, 16 May). Major General Lafayette likely sent Galvan a triplicate of his letter of 9 July to Lieutenant General Rochambeau and Rear Admiral Ternay (see GW to David Forman, this date, n.1).

2In his letter to GW of 13 June, Galvan had asked GW to keep him in mind for an assignment in the light infantry.
