Adj. Gen. Alexander Scammell’s orderly book entry for this date includes additional general orders: “The Fatigue party for finishing the New Orderly Room is to be furnish’d by Detail from the Line of the Army and will be relieved once a Week only ’till that Work is Done—The Officer Commanding the Party will detach a Corporal and six men as a Guard for the Working Tools which Guard he will relieve every Day at Troop beating.

“The money found some time ago near Head Quarters is still in the Adjutant Generals Office, it is supposed to belong to some soldier, the Adjutants of the Army are therefore desired to inform the Men on Regimental parades that the sum is less than five hundred Dollars and was found between Head Quarters and the Church in Morris Town” (orderly book, 17 Oct. 1779–22 March 1780, DNA: RG 93, Orderly Books, 1775–1783, vol. 33). GW’s aide-de-camp Richard Kidder Meade wrote a receipt on this date showing that he received $200 from Maj. Caleb Gibbs and “paid the Plaisterers by the Genls order” (Revolutionary War Accounts, Vouchers, and Receipted Accounts 1, 1776–1780, DLC:GW, ser. 5).

Gibbs also wrote the firm of Chaloner and White, asst. commissaries for purchases at Philadelphia, from Morristown on this date: “Your favour of the 4th inst. came to hand while I was absent from Head Quarters in the Country otherwise I should have answered it sooner.

“The two loaves sugar which you suppose was in the Cask with the Coffee proved not to be, as I had it thoroughly examined in the presence of Mr [Robert] Blair & which he was satisfied upon—the Spermacitie Candles have not as yet Come to light.

“The Beef, nutmegs, & Coffee Mill was receipted for by Doctr McHenry in my absince.

“I have to request you would be so kind as to procure a barrell of Cranberries & have them forwarded as soon as possible for the use of the family—I hope you will not fail in this as they are exceedingly wanted” (PHi: Chaloner and White Collection).
