1. The 16th Massachusetts Regiment was not formed until July 1780. William Hutton, of Boston, had enlisted in the 10th Massachusetts Regiment in December 1776. He served as a private and corporal in the regiment before his discharge in December 1779. In April 1781, GW appointed Hutton provost marshal of the army, but dismissed him the same month for failure to execute his duties (see General Orders, 20 and 22 April 1781).
