George Washington Papers

From George Washington to Major General Israel Putnam, 21 March 1779

To Major General Israel Putnam

Head Quarters Middlebrook 21st March 1779.

Dr Sir

I have been favored with yours of the 13th Inst.

The papers you inclosed I herewith return—In my letter of the 9th—I gave my opinion on the measures to be pursued in Capn Scudders and Doctor Anthony’s case—so that the papers are of no further use to me—and may be communicated to the Court of Admiralty if they throw any light on the affair.1

You will be pleased to forward Col. Hazens Letter.2 I am sir &.

G. W——n

Df, in James McHenry’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW.

1For the dispute between William Smith Scudder and Benjamin Anthony then being adjudicated in a Connecticut court of admiralty, see George Clinton to GW, February 1779; and Putnam to GW, 2 March, and n.1 to that document.

2GW probably is referring to his letter to Moses Hazen of this date.
