1. Joseph Howell, Jr., had been appointed to this position on 27 Aug. 1778 (see General Orders, that date). John Bankson (1754–1814) of Philadelphia, who had been commissioned an ensign in the 1st Pennsylvania Battalion in October 1775 and had been promoted to first lieutenant in January 1776, became a captain in the 2d Pennsylvania Regiment in late 1776 when that regiment was formed from the 1st Battalion. He served as regimental paymaster from this date to sometime in January 1781. Transferring to the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment in January 1783, Bankson was breveted a major in September 1783 and served to the end of the war. He subsequently settled in Baltimore.
