Circular to Officers Commanding at Hospitals

Valley Forge April 4th 1778.

Sir,

Genl McIntosh is upon a visit to the several Hospitals to inspect into the œconomy and management of them, and the Military order & government observed at each. Any orders which you may receive from him are strictly to be obeyed, as coming from Sir Yr most Obedt Servt

Alexander Scammell on 3 April: Capt. Jonathan Phillips at Princeton, Capt. “John Bewel” (Lt. John Buell) at Easton, Col. Richard Humpton at Bethlehem, Capt. Francis Child at Allentown, Capt. Albert Chapman at Ephrata, Ens. Robert Foster at Lititz, Capt. Andrew Irvine at Warwick, Capt. James Bancroft at Schaefferstown, and Col. George Gibson and Lt. Edward White at Lancaster. Scammell added: “Major [Tobias] Furnald who was at Reading is gone on Furlough. As the Number of sick is much diminished at that place shall send a Capt. up to succeed him” (DLC:GW).
