General Orders
Head-Quarters, Morristown, March 1st 1777.
Parole: Dorchester.Countersign: Derby.
Alexander Hamilton Esqr: is appointed Aide-De-Camp to the Commander in Chief, and is to be respected and obeyed as such.1
Isaac Budd Dunn Esqr: will do the duty of Adjutant General, Pro Tempore, and to be attended to accordingly.2

1. Although the circumstances concerning Hamilton’s appointment as an aide-de-camp to GW are unknown, GW may have requested him to join his staff in January 1777 (see GW to Robert Hanson Harrison, 20 Jan. 1777, and note 2).
2. Dunn served as adjutant general pro tempore until 9 April 1777 (see General Orders, that date).
