To George Washington from Ensign John March, 10 October 1775
From Ensign John March
10 October 1775. “By Reason of A Weak Constitution I find myself Incapable of doing my Duty—I therefore pray yr Excellency will be pleased to grant me a Discharge as there are Several of Firm Constitutions that wou’d be glad to supply the Vacancy.”
LS, DLC:GW. The date is taken from the docket. Capt. Hezekiah Hutchins and Lt. Col. Israel Gilman signed their names under March’s signature apparently as an endorsement of his request.
John March (1738–1809), an ensign in Hutchins’s company in Col. James Reed’s New Hampshire regiment, was discharged on this date. His name is erroneously given in GW’s list of officers discharged between 15 Aug. 1775 and 10 Aug. 1776 as “Wm March” (DLC:GW).
