Errors Excepted Thomas Knox

LB, DLC:GW. It is in GW’s hand. Running totals are omitted.

GW placed his first order with Thomas Knox of Bristol in December 1755 and his second on 18 Jan. 1757 (John Carlyle to GW, 12 Jan. 1756, n.4.). GW’s invoices of 1755 and 1757 have not been found, but Knox’s invoice listing the goods sent to GW in 1757 is dated 28 Sept. 1757. The articles listed here in 1758 include items that Knox failed to send in September 1757 (see GW to Knox, 26 Dec. 1757) as well as items that GW ordered on 30 Dec. 1757 and in January 1758.

1For John Copithorn’s preceding voyage from Virginia to London, see John Carlyle to GW, 25 July 1758, n.3. Copithorn in the Nugent Only entered port at the Rappahannock River on 11 Nov. 1758 with twenty caskets of European goods and two passengers. He entered the South Potomac from the Rappahannock River on 2 Dec. 1758.

2On 30 Dec. 1757 GW ordered from Knox “100 Wt of dble and 150 of Single refind Sugar.” Knox is recording here that he filled GW’s order by sending one cask holding (1) 15 double loaves of sugar with a gross weight of 1 hundredweight plus 19 pounds, the tare (container weight) of 5 pounds bringing the net weight to a hundredweight plus 14 pounds, at a price of 11 pence per pound costing £5.15.6; and (2) 20 single loaves of sugar, gross weight 1½ hundredweight plus 25½ pounds, tare 8½ pounds, net weight 1½ hundredweight plus 17 pounds, at 9 pence per pound, costing £6.18.9, for a total cost to GW of £12.16.3.

3The four dozen plaid hose were among the items that GW complained of not receiving according to order in the September 1757 shipment.
