GW crossed at Hog Island, about six miles south of Williamsburg (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 281). Captain Stowe may have been Joseph Stowe, a ship captain who sailed out of Virginia in the wine trade (Va. Gaz., 24–31 Aug. 1739, and P&D, 29 Sept. 1768).
