James Madison Papers

Charles Hill to James Madison, 29 November 1825

King & Queen Novemr. 29th. 1825

Gentlemen Visitors

Mr John A Taliaferro informs me, he has applied to you for the office of Librarian in the University of Virginia, and being a stranger to all of you, has requested me to write you, a few lines by way of recommendation. This is therefore to certify that Mr Taliaferro lived with me as a student of Law the years 1821 & 1822, his conduct during that time, was always highly exemplary, and, as far as I had an opportunity of judging, his knowledge was both extensive and accurate. On the whole, I do not hesitate to express it as my opinion, that his qualifications both as to Character and competency are fully adequate to the office he solicits. I will further add, that I know Mr Taliaferro’s Connexions, some of them intimately, and I can with pleasure say, they are as respectable as any in the Country. Most Respectfully, yr. obSt.

Charles Hill
