My dear sir,

Permit me to add, to the general acclamation with which you must be surrounded and filled, an individual gratulation on the great, the auspicious event, which covers with honor and safety our beloved country, at the same time that it raises & fixes on those who have guided & directed the storm which is past, a glorious an imperishable renown.1 With the highest respect and with a heart elated with joy, I am, dear sir your affectionate obedt servant

1Henry Clay’s private secretary, Henry Carroll, arrived in New York on the evening of 11 Feb. 1815 with a copy of the Treaty of Ghent. By 13 Feb. the news had reached Boston and Washington via express riders, and on the evening of 14 Feb. Carroll handed the treaty to James Monroe, who took it immediately to JM (New York Commercial Advertiser, 12 Feb. 1815; Massachusetts Salem Gazette, 14 Feb. 1815; Daily National Intelligencer, 14 and 15 Feb. 1815; Brant, Madison, description begins Irving Brant, James Madison (6 vols.; Indianapolis, 1941–61). description ends 6:367).
