§ From James Monroe. 10 October 1814, War Department. “I have the honor to lay before you a list of appointments in the army of the United States made during the recess of the Senate.”

The enclosures (57 pp.; printed in Senate Exec. Proceedings, description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America (3 vols.; Washington, 1828). description ends 2:535–72) listed 399 appointments in various branches of the army, including that of Andrew Jackson as major general on 1 May 1814; 668 promotions in the infantry and first rifle regiment through May 1814; and 664 promotions in the infantry, artillery, engineers, and dragoons from April through October 1814. JM forwarded the list to the Senate on 14 Oct. 1814 (DNA: RG 46, Executive Proceedings, Nominations, 13B–A3).
