1. Gulian C. Verplanck (1786–1870) was born into a wealthy New York City family and graduated from Columbia College in 1801. Active in New York politics as a Federalist and a co-founder of the Washington Benevolent Society, he became increasingly sympathetic to the Republican cause. Writing under the pseudonym “Abimelech Coody,” he published Letter to the Hon. Saml. L. Mitchell, M.D. … On the Danger of Putting Money into the U. States’ and Manhattan Banks … (New York, 1811; 24347), which satirized extreme positions in both parties. In 1812, he opposed DeWitt Clinton’s bid for the presidency. He authored numerous additional political essays as well as literary and scholarly works, was elected to the New York legislature in 1820, served in Congress, 1825–33, and joined the Whig majority in the state senate, 1838–42 (Robert W. July, The Essential New Yorker: Gulian Crommelin Verplanck [Durham, N.C., 1951], 3, 7, 11, 15–18, 29–31, 43–47, 60, 221–22; Baltimore Sun, 21 Mar. 1870).
