2 January 1810, Providence, Rhode Island. Urges JM to appoint Henry Wheaton, son of Seth Wheaton and recently returned from legal studies in Europe, to the office of district attorney, about to become vacant.
RC (DNA: RG 59, LAR, 1809–17, filed under “Wheaton”). 2 pp. Signed by Smith and four others. In October 1814 JM nominated Henry Wheaton, then editor of the N.Y. National Advocate and later to become a noted international lawyer, to the position of judge advocate in the U.S. Army. Wheaton was also to correspond with JM throughout the 1820s ( , 2:535, 542).
