From Ira Allen, 12 March 1807 (Abstract)

§ From Ira Allen. 12 March 1807, Washington. “In Persuance of my Objects in having Interviews and Corrispondance with thier Excellencies Anthony Merrey & Daved Erskine Esquires Ministers of great Britain to the United States that by thier i⟨n⟩vestigation of facts Contain[ed] in the oliv⟨e⟩ Branch I might Convince the British Government that by false Representations the Court of Admiralty and government had Been Imposed on amongst other objects in my Late application to the Senate of the United Stat⟨es⟩ were the following in a Written stateme⟨nt⟩ to a Committee ‘To Effect those objects it would be Necessary for a sum of money in Advance and for a Committee of Congress to Proseed to Vermont and Meet at Burlington about the first of Octr. Next for an Investigation of the Preseeding Matters to state facts and Make Report to the Next Session of Congress which would Lay a foundation for a final Settlement.’ The facts are that this Case is Peculear to it self for although great Losses have been Sustained in my Property in Vermont which agreeable to your Letter of March 10th. 1805 to Mr. Monroe the British Government ought to Compensate me for,1 yet I never Contemplated that they would Pay for all my Property in Vermont Because I have always Considered that some might be Recovered by Suits in Law if the government would Give Up the Private Information that may have Influenced the Court of Admiralty and I Submit that Such Men ought to be Punished to secure the Repose of Nations and Rights of Individuals on the frontiers which is doubly Interesting as it would Turn the Blam[e] on those on whom it ought to Rest Enable me to Collect Dammage if Men of Property which would Lessen my Dammage on the British Government these were my Reasons for Requesting Messers Monroe & Pinkney in my Letter of the 20th. of Augt. Last [not found] if Possible to Consert measures in thier Negociations to have a final Settlement of my Claims made in the United States to these Matters I invite the Attention of the Executive of the United States and Submit the Propriety of this Letters being Sent to S,d Ministers in London.”
