§ From Walter Forward. Ca. 9 December 1806. “The Secry. of State will please to pay the above account to Frederick Bates Esquire.”

RC (DNA: RG 217, First Auditor’s Accounts, No. 18,925). 1 p. Appended to Forward’s 5 December 1806 detailed account statement for publishing the laws of the United States in the Pittsburgh Tree of Liberty, 13 May–23 Sept. 1806 (5 pp.), below which is the 9 December 1806 attestation of George Robinson, justice of the peace for Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, that Forward appeared before him and swore to the accuracy of the statement. Filed with this accounting is a one-page statement to Forward in the amount of $81.50, written in Pleasonton’s hand: “For publishing in his Gazette at Pittsburg Pennsa, the Acts of the first Session of the Ninth Congress, comprizing 163 pages Octavo @ 50 Cents ⅌ page.” Pleasonton signed and certified the accuracy of the account on 2 January 1807; Wagner canceled Pleasonton’s signature and signed below.
